Handling, Storage & Safety Guide

Everything you need to safely receive, store, handle and dispose of laboratory chemicals — storage classes explained, hazard symbols decoded, and shelf-life guidance.

Chemical Storage Classes

Every product supplied by Kiran Light Group carries a storage class on its label and Certificate of Analysis. The class tells you how each chemical must be segregated and stored to remain stable and safe. Always store incompatible classes apart and follow the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for each product.

Flammables

Solvents & Organics

  • Store in a ventilated flammables cabinet, away from ignition sources
  • Keep at recommended temperature (often cool, dry conditions)
  • Bond and ground containers when dispensing bulk volumes
  • Keep away from oxidisers and strong acids
  • Examples: ethanol, acetone, toluene, diethyl ether
Corrosives

Acids, Bases & Salts

  • Store in corrosion-resistant, ventilated cabinets
  • Segregate acids from bases and from flammables
  • Use secondary containment (trays) for liquids
  • Keep high-purity salts dry and tightly sealed
  • Examples: hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, buffers
Cold Chain

Biochemicals & Stains

  • Store refrigerated (2–8 °C) or frozen per the label
  • Protect light-sensitive dyes & stains from direct light
  • Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles; aliquot where possible
  • Keep desiccated if hygroscopic
  • Examples: enzymes, biological stains, reagent kits

Reading the Label & Certificate of Analysis

Every pack ships with a label and a Certificate of Analysis (CoA). Here's what each field means and why it matters:

Field What to Look For Why It Matters
CAS Number Unique identifier for the substance (e.g., 64-17-5 for ethanol) Exact identity
Purity / Assay Grade such as ≥99% (HPLC), AR/GR, or LR as stated on the CoA Fit for method
Batch / Lot No. Traceable to the matching Certificate of Analysis Traceability
Pack Size Net quantity — e.g., 25 g, 100 g, 500 g, 100 mL, 1 kg Right quantity
Hazard Pictograms GHS symbols with H- and P-statements; refer to the SDS Safe handling
Storage & Shelf Life Storage condition and best-before / re-test date Stability

Storage Conditions at a Glance

Product Type Recommended Storage Key Precaution
Organic Solvents Cool, ventilated flammables cabinet Away from ignition
Acids & Bases Corrosion-resistant cabinet, segregated Never store together
High-Purity Salts & Inorganics Dry, tightly sealed, room temperature Keep desiccated
Biological Stains & Dyes Cool, dark; some refrigerated Protect from light
Biochemicals & Enzymes Refrigerated 2–8 °C or frozen per label Avoid freeze–thaw

Bulk & Standing Supply — What to Know

Running a routine assay or production process? Kiran Light Group offers standing supply of chemicals and reagents on flexible schedules, with reserved stock and volume pricing.

Plan Cadence Includes
Weekly Supply Every 1–6 days Selected pack sizes + Certificate of Analysis per batch
Monthly Supply Every 7–27 days Pack sizes + CoA + reserved stock
Quarterly Supply Every 28+ days Pack sizes + CoA + reserved stock + priority dispatch

Standing Supply Tips

  • An advance may be required when the standing order is set up
  • Schedules and quantities can be adjusted before each dispatch
  • Every dispatch ships with a batch-matched Certificate of Analysis
  • Contact us for volume pricing and reserved stock on bulk orders

Quick Safety & Handling Tips

  • Always read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before opening a new chemical
  • Wear appropriate PPE — lab coat, safety goggles and gloves suited to the substance
  • Handle volatile, toxic or odorous chemicals inside a fume hood
  • Segregate incompatible classes (acids/bases, oxidisers/flammables) in storage
  • Label every decanted container and never return unused material to the stock bottle
  • Check the shelf-life / re-test date and dispose of expired stock per local regulations
  • Keep the batch-matched Certificate of Analysis for your records and QC
